By now, most of Ferris State University and Big Rapids have heard of Betsy Garbe shaving her head to raise awareness and funds for Relay for Life. After Garbe’s grandfather’s 25 anniversary of his death and finding out her aunt was cancer free, Garbe took on the challenge.
“It started as a joke; I planned to start growing my hair out. Then one day I was looking at videos of people who had shaved their head and I thought they were really beautiful. And then I thought why can’t I? I can look beautiful as well,” said Garbe.
So then the planning started. After telling her RSO, Public Relations Student Society of America, Garbe said it really hit her and she couldn’t back out and that telling PRSSA was the point of no return. According to Garbe, there were plenty of hesitations. Since she decided so early on, the long wait was the hardest part.
So on January 30, Garbe followed through and went to the Studio and shaved her head. According to Garbe, it was very dreamlike and surreal.
“The first cut she did took my breath away. It was the moment where I realized this is real. After that it felt like a dream. It really helped me having all those people there supporting me. It felt great to have the support of my friends and family. Even the community’s support is positive and great,” said Garbe.
Garbe is a junior in the Public Relations program at Ferris State University and the vice president of internal relations for the Ferris Chapter of PRSSA. At the salon, Garbe raised $40.00 and to date she has raised close to $300.00. The goal is $1000.00 and anyone who would like to make a donation can go to www.relayforlife.org and search for Ferris State PR.
