On Friday, members of Ferris State PRSSA took a trip to Lansing for an agency tour. The day was full of laughs, networking, and learning about different agencies in the area. Here’s a quick overview of our day in Lansing.
After a two-hour drive early in the morning (which began with an even earlier breakfast), members arrived at their first stop: Martin-Waymire. We were greeted with muffins and the friendly face of David Waymire. He spoke to us about the transition from journalist to PR professionals and about public policy.
Also, we got a chance to meet with one of the interns, Jesseca, who happens to be a member of Michigan State’s PRSSA chapter. She shared with us some great advice on how to get involved and get internships.
-Apply for internships even if you have no experience.
-Intern in different types of PR fields. You may not like it in the end, but you will gain valuable experience that you can use elsewhere.
-Network by attending different PRSSA and PRSA events (like agency tours!!)
-Do research on companies that you are interested in applying at.
The next stop on our agency tour was Truscott-Rossman. Here, we were greeted with lunch and even more smiling faces. Everyone wanted a chance to say hello and share their tidbits of information.
We were extremely fortunate to get the chance to talk to both founders, Kelly Rossman-McKinney and John Truscott. They both talked to us about what it was like to go from owning their own firms to joining forces and creating a new firm together. Kelly gave us some great insight on her background in public relations and how she got involved. John talked to us about different crises he had faced throughout his years in public relations.
The day ended with a tour of Michigan’s Capitol Building. Overall, it was a really fun day full of learning. A special shout out to our internal relations team for arranging this tour for our students! Thank you everyone who made this agency tour possible!
