Government Shutdown Has a Bigger Impact Than You Think

By: Noura Ashri

Damage caused by the government shutdown has finally ended after 16 days of people going without work.

An agreement was made in congress that restored the functioning of many government agencies and websites.  Congress needed to come to a budget agreement in order to reopen the government. The result of the agreement is an increase in the debt limit to $16.7 trillion.

The agreement did not come a minute too soon. The VA was worried they were going to run out of funding and be unable to pay veterans and their families their benefits. They were given a deadline for the day after the agreement.

The one benefit that came from the government shutdown is a new appreciation for the services that were no longer available during the shutdown. Even President Obama was there to show support when the federal jobs were reopened.

“What you do is important, and don’t let anybody else tell you different,” he said.

The result was that President Obama was given almost what he originally asked for before the shutdown. The whole thing just took up time and money to come to a conclusion that should have been agreed on in the first place.
