Twitter, blogs, Instagram, oh my! Who runs the public relations for a PRSSA chapter, you may ask. Who runs the social media sites, the speakers that are brought in, and the newsletter that is sent out to our PRSSA alumni?
The Chapter Development team, ran by Kaitlyn Baase, does all of that and more. At every meeting, the chapter development team work hard to come up with social-media and blog content that everyone can enjoy. They also spend their meetings coming up with ways to improve the chapter, such as doing mini presentations on “What it means to Dress Business Casual.”
“I can’t wait to try and find ways to work with other PRSSA chapters across the state,” said Baase. “I’m also excited to bring in some awesome speakers and to generate some good content on all of our social media platforms.”
Every month, Chapter Development publishes four to five blogs written by the members within the team. These blogs range from student spotlights, PR crisis and event blogs. Writing these blogs gives students an opportunity to gain real-world experience and to work on their number one skill need in the public relations field: writing. They are able to use their voice and opinion to write about what is going on in the chapter and in public relations, as a whole.
“I enjoy writing blogs because I like gaining the experience and creating content for my portfolio,” said blog manager and junior in the public relations program, Calsie Penzien.
Ferris State PR also has many social-media outlets that are run by our social media manager, Jessica McLean. McLean works out of the chapter development team who give her ideas on content and what could be relevant to post. Our social media outlets include: Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and Pinterest. She helps to grab readers’ attention and interact with them so that they know more about Ferris State PR.
Last but certainly NOT least, the chapter development team is responsible for bringing speakers from the public relations field in to talk to students. The next speaker to come in will be David Murray, who will discuss public relations in the healthcare field.
The chapter development team along with the rest of Ferris State PRSSA is excited to see what the rest of the 2013-2014 has in store for them!
