This past Friday, Ferris State’s chapter of PRSSA took a bus trip to Lansing to visit the Michigan Economic Development Corporation and PR agency Truscott Rossman to discuss public relations with both organizations.
Our first stop was the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, responsible for the Pure Michigan campaign. Our host for the day was Michelle Begnoche, a senior communications specialist with the organization. She walked us through the history of the corporation as well as public relations and business decisions made by the company throughout its existence. Michelle discussed target publics, the budget they work with, and described the success of the program using hard numbers. Many of us were excited to listen to Michelle speak.
After a short walk through downtown Lansing, we arrived at Truscott Rossman, where we were able to sit down and have a conversation with a lobbyist, who explained to us why lobbying is important to businesses as well as non-businesses. After speaking with him, CEO of Truscott Rossman, Kelly Rossman-McKinney approached our organization and gave us a bit of insight into the busy lives of employees and interns at the agency. She even allowed us to sit in on an interview with WILX, the Lansing television news station, about Detroit’s emergency financial manager. Kelly was driven in her communication to the camera. She was very welcoming to our organization and handed each visiting member a business card individually before we left. We were also left with a large bag of assorted snacks.
Between learning about the benefits of Pure Michigan and exploring Truscott Rossman, PRSSA had an enjoyable time in Lansing. Thanks again to both organizations for taking time out of your busy schedules to host us! It was greatly appreciated!
