Last Tuesday at the “WMPRSA Mentor Hub Mixer,” two-minute networking sessions took place where West Michigan students, including Ferris State PR, were able to meet with 19 different Public Relations professionals in various fields.
Ferris State PR was able to take 17 students to the mixer, taken place at the Haworth Interphase in Downtown Grand Rapids. networking opportunities are so important when it comes down to finding internships or jobs, so to learn about the professionals in the area and how they could help us was a venture we didn’t want to pass up.
Ferris State PR upperclassmen and many underclassmen partook in this opportunity. For underclassmen, it was a great way to get a look into the different fields of Public Relations that there is. We were able to talk to people from non-profit PR, agency PR and even PR in the health field. For underclassmen who haven’t completely figured out what it is that they want to get a career in, it was great to peak into the minds of these professionals, even if only for two minutes.
This mixer took on the atmosphere of a “speed-dating” program, but only with PR and communications professionals in west Michigan. During these two-minute networking sessions, Ferris State PR students were allowed to probe the minds of these professionals about anything, including information that is PR related. When each session concluded, the students and professionals were able to exchange business cards so that they were able to keep in contact.
After the networking sessions were over, the students were able to choose their top 3 choice on who they would like to be their mentor. This opportunity was greatly beneficial for the students because it gave them an opportunity to openly talk about their comments and concerns related to public relations.
A big thanks to West Michigan PRSA, the PR professionals who volunteered their time to participate, and Jenny Luth from Clark Communications who assisted greatly in making this event a success. Ferris State PR had a great time and we look forward to attending more events in the future!
